18 June 2021 On Wednesday 16 June, Sem van Eikeren, grandson of Henk de Jong, drove the first pile of the new corrugated board factory of De Jong Verpakking in De Lier. Despite the corona measures, it was a festive moment. WDP will project manage the new production location and the new distribution center. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2022.
The new and sustainable building will have an area of over 85,000 m2 over 2 floors. The location will be used for production, storage, distribution and offices.
The growing demand for corrugated packaging (driven, among other things, by e-commerce), in combination with the need for more efficient land use, form the basis for this innovative project. Michiel Assink, General Manager WDP: “The construction of a multi-layer project requires a lot of knowledge and experience and we have proven that we can do this.”
Expansion
The property will be situated next to the current De Jong Verpakking building in the Westerlee industrial area in De Lier. Demolition work started in September 2020, after which the ground was prepared for construction. Now is the time to start construction work.
Henk de Jong, owner of De Jong Verpakking: “After the long preparations, we are very proud that we are going to build. The corrugated board market is very busy, so we definitely need to expand our capacity.” In the coming months, 2,500 piles will be driven on a floor area of approximately 56,000 m2. The production hall will be situated on the ground floor and connected to the current hall. A distribution hall and a large truck park will be built on the first floor. Trucks will reach the first floor via a ramp.
Durability
The use of corrugated cardboard packaging has been growing for years. In recent years there has been a very strong increase in e-commerce, because many webshops want to use a material that is 100% recyclable and 100% renewable.
De Jong Verpakking supplies food and non-food, fresh produce, horticulture and e-commerce. In addition to the sustainable product, the building itself will also be built with an eye for the environment. For example, 2.6 MW of solar panels will be installed on the roof, the residual heat from the production will be optimally used and we are working on a project for an e-boiler.
