6 November 2020 Millions of boxes are used daily in the Netherlands. Maybe you think all this is imported from Asia, but nothing could be further from the truth. From our own cardboard factory in the Westland, we supply 2.5 million boxes daily through the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. With so much packaging from our Dutch corrugated board factory it turns out to be possible to produce this locally. #madeinholland
How do you make corrugated cardboard?
The process of making corrugated cardboard is quite simple. It’s 3 layers of paper that you glue together, of which the middle layer is a flute. Then the corrugated sheets are punched and printed and the product is ready. Sounds pretty easy, right? However, if you take a look behind the scenes, it turns out that this is not so easy and there is a lot involved. In this article we take you into our lives between the cardboard boxes.
Cardboard factory
Making a cardboard box starts with the paper. Large reels of paper come from paper mills. At the cardboard factory of De Jong Verpakking approximately 80% of all paper consists of recycled paper. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use 100% recycled paper, because you cannot recycle paper indefinitely. Recycled paper also has other technical properties, so in some cases you have to use new paper. These large rolls of paper are unwound in a corrugated machine, after which the 3 different layers are glued together. You can choose between brown, white or preprint paper. With the option of preprint paper, this paper is already printed in a high quality with up to 8 colors and a layer of lacquer. If a customer chooses for double corrugated cardboard, because he needs a stronger box, an additional flute and an outside will be added. At the end of the corrugating machine, the sheets are cut to the right dimensions, after which they temporarily go into storage.
Printing boxes
After this intermediate storage, the cardboard sheets are further processed. They are then printed, punched and, if necessary, folded and glued on the processing machines in our cardboard factory. This all depends on the wishes of the customer. The type of packaging and the number of colours is often customer specific and is determined by the product that has to be packed and shipped with it. For example, a tomato grower will go for a specific tray with printing for a supermarket. A webshop will opt for a handy folding shipping box with the logo of his company. Also for example a moving box or a completely blank American folding box are possible and can be delivered in the dimensions or qualities a customer needs. It is then good to know that all these boxes can be printed in multiple colors and can be made in different sizes.
